Message from the New PRSA President, Edna Acosta-Belén

It is with great pleasure that I undertake the position of President of PRSA after serving for two years as Vice President during Carlos Santiago's presidency. Under
Dr. Santiago's leadership we made major strides in the process of institutionalizing the organization, including the development of its web site and the on-line accessibility of the Conference Call for Papers and program. The success of the 4th PRSA Conference, held in october 26-28, 2000 at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst was evident in the large number of people who registered. The Conference Program included 38 panels and attracted over 250 participants and attendees. This increase in participation is another clear indication of how the organization is growing and maturing. I want to thank PRSA Past President Carlos Santiago, Amherst Conference Program Chairs Manuel Frau-Ramos and Carmen Rolón, and Gloria Bernabé-Ramos at the Center for Latin American, Caribbean, and Latino Studies (CLACLS) at U-Mass, Amherst as well as all the colleagues and students of the Five College area, for contributing to the success of the 4th PRSA Conference.

The first steps also have been taken to establish a PRSA Secretariat. I am pleased to inform you that the Center for Latino, Latin American, and Caribbean Studies
(CELAC) at the University at Albany, SUNY will serve as the organizarion's Secretariat for the next four years (2001-2004). This decision by the PRSA Executive Council will provide the continuity and stability for the organization to continue growing and enriching our professional endeavors.

With the newsletter, En la brega, PRSA hopes to keep their members informed of our plans and activities during the two year period between conferences. The newsletter will not be a substitute to the more frequent and less costly electronic communication, so I also encourage you to visit the PRSA web site (www.puertorican-studies.org) periodically for up-to-date information. if you know of any organizations that might want to establish electronic links with the PRSA, please email us at: PRSA@cnsunix.albany.edu. Also, new PRSA Secretary Manuel Frau-Ramos has started an electronic list-serv for faster communication with the membership on professional opportunities and announcements, and to foster dialogue on issues of concern to academics, activists, and students. You may access this site at: www.groups.yahoo.com/group/PRSA.

In another Section of En la brega you will find the results of the recent PRSA election. We congratulate and welcome the newly elected officers. I am especially
looking forward to working with Vice President Pedro Cabán and the other elected officers in finding ways to make the organization more supportive of our professional activities and interests. I am pleased to inform you that we are in very good financial shape as a result of the Amherst Conference. Our current budget
is close to $12,000. Having adequate resources facilitates the planning of additional activities for the next PRSA Conference (in October 2002), site to be
decided soon) as well as expanding our membership services.

We welcome your ideas and suggestions as to how PRSA can best serve you. Please feel free to write or email us.

Un saludo solidario de, Edna Acosta-Belén
